Happiness

Please respond to the following prompts: I expect you to to ask an open-ended critical level question at the end of your response that may prompt someone else. I also expect you to react to one other's comment within your own reflection. Make sure you are being thoughtful and discerning.

What constitutes "happiness" in life? What do you need to be happy? What should drive and push us regarding happiness? What might blind us from becoming happy?

  1. In my own opinion, I think the only things that you absolutely NEED to be happy are family, health, faith, and friends. At least in my life, these are the basis of how I feel happiness. Being a teenager in high school I know that many people find it so hard to be happy. That is probably why statistics prove to show that teenagers are the ones who most commonly commit suicide. Our generation is so hard to live in because of the way we look at happiness and life. Happiness is a feeling and it is also a decision. You are the one who controls your own happiness and it depends on you how you get it for yourself. Don't let anybody determine how happy you are and you need to choose what is the best for your emotional & mental health. There is a quote from "Winter Dreams" that says "So he tasted the deep pain that is reserved only for the strong, just as he had tasted for a little white the deep happiness..." Does pain outweigh happiness? Why do you think it is easier for us to feel pain instead of happiness?

    1. I think it's easier for us to feel pain because its a deeper emotion. When we are happy we smile and feel good but when were upset those feelings also turn into physical hurt, such as that sick feeling in your stomach or a pain in your chest. These physical pains that compliment the hurt cause us to feel those things stronger.

    2. Reading yours made me realize that happiness is a choice and I wrote about it in my response. I feel as if pain can outweigh happiness in certain times. It all depends on the person and what they allow to happen in those times. I feel as if it's easier for us to feel pain instead of happiness because one can never truly reach the depth of their happiness while we can feel the pain and know when its become too much.

To be happy I believe one needs love and ambition. Being surrounded by people you love brings good experiences and memories. It is especially important to surround yourself with people who have positive energies. Often if negative people are in your life it starts to make you look at life in a negative light. I also think it is important to have ambitions in life because without goals there is nothing to strive for. Accomplishing a goal helps build confidence and bring happiness into our lives. I think our happiness becomes blinded by societies expectations. Many teenagers struggle with not being able to fit in to the mild of what we are suppose to be and that negativity that is directed toward those flaws makes people conscious and unhappy. An important question for everyone to ask is : Do you believe that being surrounded by negativity can cause you to act negative?

    1. Yes. I believe that if you are surrounded by negativity then you start to become a negative person because what you hang around influences the way that you act. I know that when I am surrounded by people that are negative and are always thinking about the bad things in life then it makes me feel bad and also start to look at the negative things in life.

    2. I agree, I think surrounding yourself with people who bring you down will only later bring yourself down and surrounding yourself with people who make you happy will only later make you happy. We are influenced with the people around us and its important to make those people good people expect we are blinded by the society and we care to much what other people say causing us to be blind of our happiness.

    3. I also agree that surrounding yourself with positivity is what contributes to happiness. I think being surrounded by negativity deeply effects your attitude, if you let it. That also, does not excuse anyone that has had bad circumstances become bitter. We can choose whoever we want to be. Happiness is a choice.

  3. I believe that true happiness comes from being with the people that you love. This may include family or friends of sort. If you are with the people that you love then you will always be happy because they are the things in life that provide happiness for you. I always feel true happiness when I am with my family and friends. I feel that some things including money and objects get in the way of giving us true happiness. These things give you temporary happiness but it doesn’t last very long and doesn’t truly satisfy yourself. What objects stand in your way of true happiness?

    1. I think that objects that some people think gives them "happiness" are what blocks our way, objects like alcohol and drugs that create a facade of happy feelings masking the true way we feel about our lives.

In my opinion in order to be happy we need to surround ourselfs with people who care about us and with people who make us smile, I think that when you are around positive people it brings positivity in your life and same goes for neggitivity if your around a bunch of negative people you bring neggitivity in your life. Accomplishing goals is a great way to build self confidence and happiness, a question that keeps piping in my had is what is real happiness? How do we know when we're truly happy?

    1. I think we know when we are truly happy becuase we will feel good inside and smile. I aslo believe that we know were happy when a laugh comes out because the only emotion i associate with laughing is hapiness.

  5. Happiness is not the same for any two people. Family and friends may be the main source of happiness for some people (like me). However this may not be the case for other people. What about the people that don’t have family, or have trouble making friends, do they never have happiness? These people may find happiness in some other way, whether it is drawing, acting, marrying, or any other thing. No one is in the position to criticize what happiness is for another person. Everyone should live their life happily and should experience happiness in some way as often as possible. If one of the main goals in everyone’s life is to discover happiness, it should not matter what path people take or what they are searching for. The problem with the previous statement is that in the process of finding your own happiness is often at the expense of others’ happiness. It will always be impossible to make everyone happy at the same time. Facing the fact they it is impossible to always have happiness, many of the times where happiness cannot be found could be turned around based on the attitude you have towards the situation. I agree with Emily F. when she wrote “you are the one who controls your own happiness…” Your ability to turn an undesirable situation around, whether it is tragic or just a dreary day, will determine your ability to find happiness in the future. In your life happiness comes and goes and it depends on what you do with each situation that determines how long you will be happy and how long you will be unhappy for.
Money is often thought of as getting in the way of true happiness. However there are some people that have only one goal in life and that is to become rich, and achieving that goal is the only thing that makes them happy. When this money is gone or the goal is never achieved these people don’t have the slightest idea of how to be happy anymore and happiness is no longer in their life. The drive and the determination to achieve this goal had made them happy in the past, but it overshadowed everything else that at one point provided happiness to their life and these other parts of their life soon disappeared. Again, happiness is dependent on the attitude of these people have and how they react to the loss of their dream.
Is happiness the true goal in peoples’ lives? Should it be?

    1. Well, no, happiness isn't the goal in some people's lives, some people, like the girl Mrs. Comp told us about in class, she wanted a husband that will basically take care of her for the rest of her life. I don't know if that is her happiness, but its something that she has made a goal out of. Happiness should be one of everyone's goals, its healthy if you don't try to hard doing things you think will make you happy, or happier, but do things that you absolutely enjoy, whether its sitting down reading a book, picking up a pencil and draw or kicking back listening to music as you enjoy the rain sound.

  6. In my opinion the things we need to be happy are good people that make us happy and fun things or activitoes that we enjoy doing. For me I enjoy being around friends and family those are two groups that make me happy. I also enjoy doing activities like running and playing video games or just sitting outside those really make life worth living. These things are also what drives us to be happy. I believe that the modern world with all that is happening regarding war and current events overseas and the economy is blinding us from being happy because these things cause worry and depression and you cannot be happy with worry and depression going on in your life. Is it health to be happy all the time?

    1. I think that with out some sad times in our lives we would not appreciate all of the good times. After something sad has happened to you, when something good happens you tend to feel over the top about it. So maybe being happy all the time isn't healthy.

  8. Happiness can mean many different things, depending on the person. Some people think money will buy you happiness, while others think that love can conquer all. I feel as if those moments in your life where your heart feels light and your stress free is where some people create that happiness within their life. Again as I mentioned in the beginning, happiness has a different meaning for everyone. I believe happiness is a feeling but it’s also a choice, sometimes people refuse to accept the happiness in their lives. Happiness is a mysterious shape and will mold into anything you want it to. The things that I need to be happy are my family, dogs, friends and optimism. These are the things that I need to keep me happy at all times, there all one big group; if one thing is left out I won’t be happy. As I mentioned above happiness is a choice, we don’t have to choose it. You’re the only one who can force yourself to stop feeling sad and just accept the happiness. I feel as if time is a big factor, at least to me it is, it helps me realize how precious my happiness is. At any moment, you could die, it’s a sad truth. So why waste time feeling stressed out and seeing the bad things in life when you can allow yourself the happiness and experience new moments in your life you’ll keep with you forever. Sometimes your mood can reflect on others, I have a friend who feeds off of other people’s happiness, and when you’re sad he gets sad too. Why should you ruin someone else’s mood just because your life isn’t going right? If something in your life isn’t going right just fix it as fast as you can so you can go back to being happy. I know in high school many people aren’t walking around the hallways with smiles on their faces. With all the negativity in the school, it spreads pretty fast. Also, we have a lot of teenagers who commit suicide; those kids didn’t feel too much happiness. Our generation is so hard to live in because of the way things are in the world. With all the shootings, bombings, stabbings, etc. it’s hard to feel safe anywhere anymore. With the constant worrying and stress we don’t allow ourselves the chance to just live our life without overthinking everything. We have to realize that we can’t allow those bad times or bad people to affect our lives. If we let ourselves become in a constant state of worrying we’re letting those people who caused so much havoc in our lives, to win. They would win, and I refuse to live my life in fear because of other people’s stupid choices. I love being optimistic and I have a mantra that stays with me at all time. That mantra says to just go with the flow, let your life follow its path, and whatever happens is meant to happen for some reason. There may be bad times in your life but just think of the good things that can come out of it. In any bad situation, you can always find that happiness within you to make yourself feel better. Although, sometimes in those situations the bad might overcome the good, but it’s your job to want to have happiness prevail. For example, in the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” Will Smith’s character says, “You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period” Happiness is a choice that you have to protect if you want to keep it, and don’t let anyone try and take it from you. Is happiness something that one can achieve? Or is it just us trying to pursue it?

  9. This question what constitutes happiness in life in my opinion cant be answered the same for everyone. Each person is different therefore what makes them happy is different. For instance me personally, my family and friends make me happy. Also soccer whether it is playing or watching it always seems to make me happy. Some things will never really make me happy, like money or really seeking acceptance from people that I dont even like. The things that i think should drive us as people regarding happiness is just to do whatever it is that you like and to try to help the people who care about you. This sounds so simple but there are plenty of things that get in the way of this simple goal. For example money, its true that money cant buy happiness but if you love something that is expensive then you really do need money to achieve happiness. On the other hand though creed can completely stop the pursuit of happiness. Some of the richest people are really not that happy. The stress that is put on people by society can also stop people from achieving happiness. People try to make money to impress people in society and then buy things because they are expected to by society. If the pursuit of happiness is so simple why do so many not reach a state of happiness?

  10. To me being happy consists of my family, friends, and faith. These three things help me get through each day. Being a teenager life is hard and challenging and sometimes we give up and lose our happiness. Happiness is something that is hard to find but easy to lose. Without my family, friends, and faith I honestly couldn't tell you where I would be right now. In order for me to be happy I need to just let things go. I need to put it in the hands of someone else and not think about it because if I do it will just eat me alive. I need to learn that things happen and we go through tough things but that will only make us stronger in the end and knowing that I will have my family, friends, and faith along my side will only make me happier. Why would you want to live life with no happiness? Where would we be without any happiness? Happiness is a goal that everyone wants to achieve and we should want to do whatever it takes to become happy. Being in a world of judgement and pain might blind some of us to be happy but in reality that should only want to us to have a better reason to be happy. Why do we mostly remember the painful times instead of the happy times?

    1. Laura,

this is a great question and i dont think anyone has a corrent answer to it, but i think that its because the bad times are the experiences that leave the greatest impact on someone. we all would like to change what had happened from that experience and make it better.

  11. To be happy I think you need people around you that care about you and to be doing something you love. Happiness is different for everyone though, some people can find happiness in the smallest things just by only seeing positivity in the world. Others struggle to see the positive things and may not find happiness as easily. If there is something that you love to do or want to do and you know that you will be happy then you should strive to do it. Things that blind us from happiness may be small things in life that are a struggle. Things like getting sick, having trouble in a class, or having fights with people you care about.

  12. Happiness is a choice we have to choose. I used to think happiness was something impossibly out of reach. But it's ourselves that hold us back from being happy. Happiness is simplicity- finding joy in the beauty of life. We pass up everyday the simple moments we will never have back. Like getting to know the people around us, seeing the glittering snow outside a window, or the light that shines in the late afternoon reminding you of the few weeks left until summertime. We have eyes but we choose not to see these small things. We focus too much on the stressful things that bring us to miserable days. We can't all act like we have it together all the time, because we don't. We judge people based on appearance and not substance. We fall into darkness and we feel alone and scared. The pure and valuable things in life are covered by an empty society. We should strive to happiness so we can find what we love to do and find our lights that make us glisten in our darkest moments. We can make life anything we want it to be. But we won't be seventeen forever, we will grow old and have regrets on choosing an unhappy life verses a happy one.

I think many people associate happiness with wealth and worth. While I'm not so convoluted as to believe that personal worth does not compliment happiness or what leads to ones happiness. I think that money and worth can be useful to happiness, if used in ways that are not just simply substituting stature for happiness. If you use money as a means to participate in an activity that you enjoy, but do it not for the value in the economy sense, but the value of your own happiness then money, in that sense can easily bring you happiness. Personally, after having gone on mission trips and seeing how much more joy and pleasure can be obtained by someone that has nothing than someone that can have everything, I truly believe that someones happiness is not based on how much of what they love they can do, but how much you value that which you love. When you can have anything that you want at the snap of your fingers, then the value of that which you just held most dear to your soul has just been swept away like a leaf in the wind. Happiness comes from those who choose to accept it, and escapes the grasp of those who think they have no need to chase it.

  14. Add to previous part, forgot the question.
Does a healthy amount of happiness come without a price, or do you have to equally trade in hardships and pain for the joy and exuberance that we all seek, making the most miserable and in pain the most happy?

    ReplyDelete

    1. In my opinion, there is no price on a healthy amount of happiness. I think that as long as you are happy, there isn't anything to lose except negativity.

    2. I think that it is difficult at times to be happy, and yes may be almost painful, but after you feel that optimism, you gain the ability to push through the pain and not feel it anymore because you can focus on the positive energy rather than the pain.

  15. In my opinion, healthy relationships with your family and friends are the roots of happiness. Happiness is having someone that you can laugh with as well as be a shoulder to cry on. Having that best friend that you can tell everything to and not have to worry about being judged and the best friend that is your first call to hang out with on the weekends. Many people think that material things are needed in order to be happy, when really it tends to be just the opposite. The more materials people get, the less thankful they become and then, after time, it becomes harder and harder for them to become satisfied and therefore, they are less happy. You cannot have too many friendships and that’s why I believe relationships are the root of happiness; because they never get old or outdated. All of our happiness, however, can be blocked out and I believe this happens through the material things that we think we need, yet we don’t. People need to learn to let the needs of material things go and to essentially, sit back and enjoy life and the relationships that come with it. I leave you with a question: Are we influenced more by negativity or positivity? Is it easier to fall to negativity rather than rise to positivity?

  16. I think that happiness should consist of love from friends and family, also of the memories that you have with those people. What I need to be happy is good memories and good people to help influence me and have good energy. I think that hope and dreams with goals help us have a drive and pushes us to happiness. I think sometime to most of the time the things that blinds us from happiness is money and negative people. People can make the happiest person upset just by being negative about something or everything. With money I know many people say that money can’t buy happiness but that why do people think that buying the newest thing in stores makes you happy.

  17. Happiness is that feeling of sheer ecstasy. Nothing else matters but the present and what is occurring at that moment in time. I believe that in order to be happy, you need a purpose. The drive, will, motivation to strive for greater things. A purpose could constitute a multitude of things. You could have a goal, or a person, or a hobby that without, you don't feel the same positive energy as you would if you had the purpose. The drive and push to be happy is the happiness itself. I don't believe that there is a greater feeling in the world than true, pure happiness. Where everything feels right (although it may not be) and nothing else matters. Unfortunately, it is easy to get caught up in the everyday issues and problems and tragedies of in the daily lives of teenagers. We are surrounded by the pressures of growing up, making important life decisions, while attempting a balancing act of maintaining healthy relationships with friends, family, and keeping up with school work. The act of surviving adolescence is a tremendous accomplishment. With all of the negativity in our lives, it is important to maintain that idea of happiness in your head, even if it may not be achievable at that moment in time, just the hope of being happy is enough to push through all obstacles. My question to ask is: Why do teenagers tend to be more pessimistic than optimistic? What ways do you maintain an optimistic viewpoint?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Also, better question: Can something make you happy that is not necessarily good for you? What could be the consequences of that?

  19. Relationships are needed to become a happy individual. Relationships with parents, friends, siblings, a significant other, and business partners are important things in life that lead to a sense of happiness. The bonds and experiences between you and someone else is entirely personnel that make you feel a certain way. Everyone doesn’t like to be alone; instead they like to be encountered with other people to make them feel comfortable. Not being lonely is being happy in my opinion, that way you don’t feel as if you’re the only person that you can rely on and open up to.

I feel as though money is what drives and pushes us to be happy. We now live in a world that is based off the income of a person rather than the content of their character. In today’s world money is the greatest thing you can have, especially during an economic crisis. The more money you have the happier the person is because they realize that they can afford pretty much everything needed to live a healthy life. Personally I am 17 years old and every time I earn a dollar from work, caddying, or babysitting I feel extremely happy because now I have enough money to go buy me lunch or a new jacket; something that satisfies me.

School, work, and sports tend to get in the way of being happy, especially for teenagers. At this age everything starts to become overwhelming with trying to get into the college of your dreams or winning a golf tournament or getting on the honor roll. Kids want all these things because they want to be successful, not happy. Yet, once they grow up they realize that being successful makes you happy. In today’s world, being successful means making an income over $60,000 a year and raising a family. These things tend to get in the way of trying to become happy because they are to busy trying to be in the best place financially.

Personally what do you think happiness is? Is it having the most money, or best family, or sports, or friends? Explain.

  20. What constitutes "happiness" in life? What do you need to be happy? What should drive and push us regarding happiness? What might blind us from becoming happy?

Human beings thrive off of relationships. I believe that relationships make us happy, although it doesn’t always turn out that way. Not just the dating relationships, but the relationships you have with the people around you. What I need to be happy is the feeling of being accomplished, having healthy relationships with loved ones and doing what I love and experiencing new things, pushing my limits. I think what drives us is risk. Taking a risk can make us happy because, let’s say you ask that other boy/girl to prom, and its a risk if you don’t know what they’re going to say. If they say yes, would you be happy? Or taking a huge risk like gambling, you can go all in, either lose it all or win it all. I’m sure no one would be happy if they lost. Risk can go both ways. What might blind us from becoming happy could be focus. I mean, if you put all your focus into something, you don’t notice anything else that can possibly make you happy, you know? Distractions can be a good thing, to an extent. You can have that moment of happiness, even if its only for thirty seconds. A distraction can be a drive. Pretend you are on the basketball team and you have to make a free throw, you are focused on scoring that you forget the fun the sport brings, you want to win. But when someone shouts out your name and gives you a word of encouragement, a smile will slowly take place and you won’t focus completely on winning, you will be happier and chances that you will make the shot will be a tad higher.

  21. What I think drives true happiness in life is simply your attitude. Every single person on planet earth is going to have a trial in their life or a "Bump" on the road so to speak. Some of the happiest people I have ever met in my entire life are the ones that have gone through the most. For me my happiness is driven by my faith. I am a Christian and everything I do, or at least try to do is what God calls me to do. I have found that I am only satisfied with life when I put control of my life into His hands. So what pushes me to get up every morning and have a positive outlook on my life is Jesus for sure. There is a decision that every single person has to make and that is, am I going to take the circumstances that I have been given in life and become bitter because of them? Or am I going to take the circumstances I have been given and positively change my outlook and perspective. I love the quote, "we can't adjust the wind, but we can adjust our sails." I think this quote so accurately describes life and what we make of it. I think what can blind people from happiness is their attitude. You have to be optimistic and believe that there is so much good, even when it seems all bad. We have to believe that this isn't as good as it gets, there is more to be achieved.

If every person had an optimistic outlook on life would their be more happiness?

  22. Happiness is kind of like a flower bud; it can bloom into something beautiful and sweet, but it takes time, and if it gets bitten by frost, it can be hard to revive. I think a big part of happiness is love: to love and be loved, I feel like that's why we try so hard to surround ourselves with people because we want to be happy and give happiness to someone else. If you live the life that you want to live I think ultimately you will be happy. Yes, there are going to be hard times and people that once made you happy will leave, but if you can find someone and/or something good in a bad situation, you can restore that balance of happiness in your life. I think what drives us to happiness is that it makes life easier and more fun; your life is going to be more memorable and you will feel more fulfilled if you have a sense of adventure and insanity to guide you down the road of life. A lot of people think that bad things don't happen to good people; they think that if something bad happens to you that you aren't a good person and you don't have as much to live for as you think you do. But in reality, everyone gets dealt a bad hand sometimes, and the way you overcome that will influence how happy you will be when you get a good hand. There is no definition of happiness, everyone has a different take on life so everyone will be differently happy, it's the way that we find joy in what we do that determines how happy we will become.

Is happiness a word we use to describe how we feel? or is it a choice in how we live?

  23. While living life I have noticed that the only one thing that buys happiness is family and friends. My family and I have been through some though times together, but by going through difficult times it brought us even closer than we already were. I honestly don't know what I would do without my wonderful family. Every time I see them my face just lights up with happiness. Also my friends just always make me happy no matter what obstacle has gotten in the way. I believe that some people believe that materialistic items are blinding people from happiness. Materialistic items can be boughten over and over again, but family and friends can not. Also once you have everything that you want you become selfish and start to act bigger and better than everyone else. I also believe that most people take some of their family for granted which just breaks my heart. I have lost so many people in my life time that it really makes me appreciate who I have in my life especially family and friends. Family and Friends is truly the foundation for happiness.
Why do some people not believe in true happiness? How can you live your life without happiness?

  24. In life happiness is considered desirable and something everyone wants to have when they are older. As kids thinking about happiness was a lot simpler than even thinking about it now at the age of 16. To be happy I think being able to find the positive thing out of every situation is something that you need to be happy. Along with the people who are close to you. The way society looks at happiness is that the people who have the most are the ones who are happiest. That puts a lot of stress and anxiety on people who desire to be happy. The things that should make us want to be happy are things that we love and cherish. Money shouldn’t be the thing that determines if you are happy or not. It would be nice to have a lot of money so you didn’t have to worry about being able to live. Even if you have money the people who surround you should cause most of your happiness. Can being rich be mistaken for happiness?

  25. Happiness is a hard thing to see. Most people have to have everything go perfect for them to be "happy." Which is wrong because you don't need the best of everything, you need to make the best of everything. Contentment is a form of happiness that should being seen more because it doesn't involve giving anything up, or trying to hard. Being content is relaxing and pleasent because nothing is to be worried about. But why do people have to have more? Why can't people see the simple joy in life? Why does there have to be more in order for happiness to be obtained?

  26. most people think that money and happiness go hand in hand. for some people I think that is true. Some people need material items and a high social status to feel good about themselves. But I believe that true happiness comes from within. Happiness isn't something you can buy or own. Happiness is a state of mind few people are able to obtain. Hi believe happiness is possible when you don't care what others think of you and you are content with yourself.

  27. I think happiness is when you find a place in your life where you have people that matter close to you and you have someone that your in love with. Money isn't happiness but I think in times it can just make it easier to be happy because its extremely hard to be happy in a life if you have no money and your homeless, but, that being said, it doesn't mean money is happiness. You could be the richest person on the planet, but if you don't have people in your life to make a life worth living. If you only have money, your only going to buy more and more things to fill the loneliness. Would you choose to be a billionaire, or live in a small house making minimum wage with a person you love.
